UK: Ahmadi member recognized by University of Leicester as 'Inspirational Leader'

A member of the Leicester Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Ather Mirza, has been honored with a leadership award by the University of Leicester.

Mirza, who is the community's local external affairs officer and a national press assistant, was nominated by colleagues as an 'inspirational person' in their area of work at a ‘Celebrating Ethnic Diversity at Leicester’ event.

The event was part of Black History Month, which celebrates the heritage, history, arts, culture and accomplishments of people across the African and African Caribbean Diaspora, helping to understand the present through our past.

Among the inspirational figures being recognized at the event – and the award they were presented with – were, Dr Saeeda Shah, School of Education – Lifetime Achievement Award; Professor Neil Chakraborti, Department of Criminology - Lifetime Achievement Award; Ather Mirza, News and Corporate Events – Leadership Award; Dr Harjinder Sembhi, Department of Physics & Astronomy - Inspirational Person Award; and Cherese Lewis, Residential and Commercial Services – Rising Star Award.

Ather Mirza, Director of the University of Leicester’s News Centre, said: “It is heartening to be recognized by my colleagues for this leadership award. This is a milestone event for the University and it is a testament to the University’s commitment to championing equality that, so soon after the UN selected Leicester as a HeForShe champion for gender equality, we are showcasing the talent of BME staff on campus. We are proud to be a part of the University and to contribute to its success and achievements.”

The event titled, ‘Celebrating Ethnic Diversity at Leicester: A Story of Staff Experiences’ was introduced by President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester Professor Paul Boyle. a key note speech was delivered by guest speaker Dr Jane Esuantsiwa Goldsmith (Honorary Doctor of Laws).

Humaa Noori, Equalities Adviser from the University of Leicester’s Equalities Unit, said: “The key message of the event is that although we acknowledge and celebrate that we have historically come a long way towards achieving equality for ethnic minority communities, there are still significant barriers to overcome.”

  2. By the grace of Allah Almighty, our Ahmadiyya community members are achieving such honorable awards in their carriers. This is the sign of the truthfulness of Promised Messiah as he said that my Jama'at would excel in knowledge.This is the moment of thanksgiving to Allah Almighty.May Allah bless him always and may he be the recipient of even more rewards like this(Ameen).
