Two men have been arrested in Sheffield this morning by counter-terrorism police in connection with a plan to go to Syria to join ISIS.

Officers arrested two men, aged 40 and 36, on suspicion of preparation to commit an act of terrorism.

The arrests in Heeley and Shiregreen form part of an investigation related to people planning to go to Syria to join in with the conflict in the country.

The raids took place at 6am this morning but officials would not confirm their precise location.

It is understood the raids are in connection with a plan to join terrorist organisation ISIS.

A 55-year-old woman and 44-year-old man, from Batley, West Yorkshire, have also been arrested today on suspicion of terrorist fundraising.

Councillor Peter Price, who represents the Shiregreen and Brightside ward, said he was shocked at today’s news.

“I must admit I’m surprised and concerned,” he said.

“Shiregreen is a very settled community and one wouldn’t dream of something like this.

“It is quite disconcerting to think it happens on your own doorstep. You wouldn’t believe it on Shiregreen of all places.

“But I’m pleased the police are on the ball and working behind the scenes.”

Saeed Nazir, general secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Sheffield, who have repeatedly held peace conferences in the city and have previously condemned the actions of ISIS as acting against the teachings of Islam, said he was shocked to hear of the arrests.

He praised the actions of the police.

"The way the police have dealt with it has been tremendous and they have asked the community to stay calm as well," he said

“We as a Muslim community will support the Government and the measures being taken to counter criminality.”

Mr Nazir said ordinary Muslims should not be associated with the actions of those involved with groups such as ISIS.

“Islam is a very peaceful religion. If an individual is doing something related to extremism, the individual should be blamed, not the religion,” he said.
