A delegation of 35 young members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association visited Queensland Parliament in Brisbane on November 11, 2015.

Linus Power, MP, member for Logan, and Duncan Pegg, MP, member for Stretton co-hosted the historical visit that included a tour of parliament, a bi-partisan discussion on ‘role of youth in politics’, a chance to see parliament in session through the visitors’ gallery, and ending in a barbecue dinner on Riverside Terrace.

The visit provided the Ahmadiyya Muslim youth with an opportunity to learn about the history of Parliament House and Queensland’s political system.  The Ahmadiyya delegation included students from the age of 12 to professionals in Engineering, IT, Medicine and Anthropology.

For many, this was the first opportunity to get up close and personal with their elected members and walk around in Parliament House. Expressing their views after the visit, the youth described the visit as ‘educational’, ‘inspirational’, ‘exciting’, and ‘amazing’.

During the discussion, youngsters asked questions to members on how they could play an active role in politics.  Members from both sides of the politics took part in the discussion and numerous other members stopped by to say hello and made visitors feel welcomed and greeted them warmly during various parts of the visit.

The Hon. Peter Wellington, Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, acknowledged and welcomed the visit by the Ahmadiyya community while parliament was in session.

The visit was concluded with a barbecue dinner at Riverside Terrace, onlooking the Brisbane River, where members of the Ahmadiyya community were given additional opportunities to mingle with various Members of Parliament and express their gratitude for allowing this historic visit to occur.

In attendance of the barbecue were Ms. Tracy Davis - Member for Aspley, Mr. Joe Kelly - Member for Greenslopes, Mr. Stephen Bennett – Member for Burnett, Mr. Chris Whiting - Member for Murrumba and Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe Member for Sandgate and Assistant Minister of State and Leader of the House.

Mr. Linus Power, Member for Logan, expressed his appreciation for the humanitarian work that the Ahmadiyya community’s youth are doing within the local community and was happy to see that this visit had come to a successful completion and hoped that it would serve to build a better bond between the Ahmadiyya community and Queensland’s political leadership.

He also expressed his sincere regret that such dedicated people, as can be found within the Ahmadiyya community, who hold so much love for Australia, were persecuted and thus turned away from their country of origin, namely Pakistan. Linus proudly stated, “What is Pakistan’s loss is Australia’s gain”.

During the visit, the Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk – Premier of Queensland and Minister for the Arts, greeted the Ahmadiyya group and conveyed her warm welcome to Parliament and commended the group on their community work.  Madame Deputy Speaker, Ms. Grace Ignazia, also heartily welcomed the group, as did the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Hon. Cameron Dick.

The visit to Queensland Parliament was an inspiring and historical event for members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Association.  The Association is deeply thankful to all the Members of Parliament who were able to spend time with the Ahmadiyya group and hope that this is the first step in a fruitful and close-knit relationship between the Ahmadiyya community and the wonderful State of Queensland. The ministers that spent time with the Ahmadiyya youth were moved by the youth’s dedication to Australian communities and their ambition to achieve excellence. Notable contacts were made and new avenues for developing stronger community ties were paved.
