Muslims marked the festive season with a community cohesion project in which they handed out Christmas cards across the borough.
The UK’s diaspora of Ahmadiyya Muslims started settling here after fleeing persecution in Pakistan more than 100 years ago.
The group is famous for its condemnation of violence and its motto: “Love for all, hatred for none.”
Abdul Khan, who attends the Ahmadiyya mosque in Upton Park, thinks it is important to use the Christmas season to promote community cohesion throughout the borough and across religions.
“We continue to present the true teachings of Islam and promote peace, harmony and better understanding among communities and serve humanity irrespective of caste, colour or creed both in the UK and around the world,” he said. “Distributing greeting cards is one of the efforts to achieve these aims.”
He said he hoped the campaign would show that Islam does not promote violence.
“Islam is a religion of peace and it has nothing to do at all with ill mentality manifested by terrorists and by other extremists,” he said.
