DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — In his latest campaign stop, political experts said Donald Trump escalated the rhetoric of Muslims in America.
“Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,” said Trump reading from a campaign press release.
It is a statement drawing criticism from the Muslim community in Dayton.
“To say that all of them, with one wide stroke, are to be treated with one or the other way is very irresponsible and ignorant,” said Dr. Abdul Shahid, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
Shahid went on to say Trump’s remarks build upon a fear Americans may have toward the Muslim religion.
“It’s concerning when I have young kids where I don’t see a bright future,” said Shahid.
But, political experts said this is often a tactic of Trump’s when his numbers are slipping in the polls.
“In many cases, the media and Republicans in the background are thinking, ‘This is it. This will sink the campaign,'” said Lee Hannah, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Wright State University. “And he continues to defy the predictions.”
Hannah believes when a majority of the public starts paying closer attention to the primaries, Trump’s numbers may decline.
“Really, it’s in January where we’ll probably start seeing some increased attention,” said Hannah.
But Shahid hopes people will start paying attention sooner rather than later to better understand what his community is all about.
“Then and only then people will understand who their Muslim neighbors are,” said Shahid. “This can only happen with an open dialogue.”
Shahid said the doors are always open to the Dayton mosque for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community located at 637 Randolph St.
