The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which has a mosque in Rochester Hills, has urged calm following the shooting in California that killed at least 14 people and injured 17 on Wednesday.

The Muslim community offered a special prayer for the victims of the shooting during the Friday service.

“We are saddened about this tragic loss of innocent life and are praying for the victims and their families,” said Dr. Mansoor Qureshi, President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Metro Detroit. “We strongly condemn the actions of the perpetrators. In these difficult times, all citizens have to come together and promote peace and understanding.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889 and has suffered persecution in different parts of the world.

Adeel Ahmed, President of the community’s Youth Association, also attended Friday’s special prayers and said the weekly service, among other things, aims to drive the young generation towards community building.

Ahmed said their goal is “to inform our youth what we do, what Islam really stands for and to make sure our youth don’t radicalize.”

“What the terrorists are doing is not Islam. That’s their own ideology. They are doing it for their own gains,” he said.

Ahmed, a Troy resident, said he was saddened to hear about shooting in California.

“It was a horrible, horrible ordeal. It doesn’t matter what religion you follow. Your heart goes out to the victims and you don’t want to see that happening anywhere in the world,” said Ahmed.
