The Britain-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which claims to be the leading Muslim group to categorically reject terrorism, has launched a "True Islam and the Extremists" campaign, reaching out to more than 2,000 American Muslim leaders to endorse and disseminate 11 points reflecting a "correct" understanding of the Qur'an.

Among the the doctrinal touchstones are assertions that adherents of true Islam believe in nonviolent jihad of the self and of the pen, the equality, education and empowerment of women, freedom of conscience, religion and speech, and loyalty to one's country of residence.

In addition to attempting to enlist religious leaders in the campaign, the group has created an educational Web site, www.trueislam.com, complete with a link to a virtual chain letter endorsing the group's tenets.

"The Muslim American community is a diverse and vibrant community, and we may not necessarily agree on certain dogmatic beliefs," said Nasim Rehmatullah, senior vice president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA. "Our purpose here is not to debate dogma, but to recognize the common enemy of ignorance, fear and extremism that harms all Americans regardless of belief. Our purpose is to stand united against extremism and for the sake of peace and true Islam."

Citing a 2015 survey by the British public opinion firm YouGov, the group said 52 percent of Muslim Americans erroneously believe that someone from society should punish those who blaspheme against or insult Muhammad and that only 32 percent believe Islam favors separation of mosque and state. Eighteen percent of poll participants did not agree or declined to answer when asked whether true Islam condemns all forms of terrorism.

Founded in 1889, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes that the long-awaited messiah came in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908). The group's Web site asserts that "God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace."
