Canada: Ahmadi Muslim group to hold open house on Islam

“Islam is often portrayed as being against any other religion, which is not true. We acknowledge other religions, respect other religions and it’s part of our faith to respect other religions and other prophets.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is holding an event in Fort Saskatchewan in hopes of fostering peace and understanding with members of other faiths.

The Islam open house takes place Jan. 30 at the Dow Centennial Centre’s Lion’s Pride room 12 to 4 p.m.

The Islam exhibition is meant to answer questions about Islam and will have exhibitions on Islam’s holy book, the Qur’an, the role of women in Islam as well as the importance of the Messiah and other prophets in the religion.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association spokesperson Tahir Ahmed said the organization decided to hold the open house to explain the true face of Islam in light of what he perceives to be a misrepresentation and falsification of the religion by jihadist groups such as ISIS.

He believes terrorist groups have hijacked the religion to further their own political goals.

“All the terrorism going on in the world is not because of the religion, it’s a political issue that’s brought up,” Ahmed said.

He noted that the Qur’an speaks highly of prophets from Christianity and Judaism, including Jesus.

“Islam is often portrayed as being against any other religion, which is not true,” Ahmed said. “We acknowledge other religions, respect other religions and it’s part of our faith to respect other religions and other prophets.”

Ahmed’s organization has partly been inspired by the increasingly divisive rhetoric coming out of the United States, such as Donald Trump’s pledge to ban all Muslims from entering the United States if he is elected.

“Right now, society is getting worse, the sense of brotherhood is missing,” Ahmed said. “In Canada, it’s much better than in other countries, but we’re afraid that in the future, it will affect Canada as well.

“We don’t want our students, our kids, our young people working in industry, we don’t want them to miss out on that brotherhood in society,” he added.

The national Ahmadiyya Muslim Association is holding about 150 similar open houses nationwide this month. Ahmadis follow a sect of Islam that has faced persecution in their native Pakistan for their differing beliefs on the finality of the prophet Muhammad within Islam. Their motto is “Love for All, Hatred for None.”

  1. Islam is a religion of peace and harmony. In the time of Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him),there were Jewish tribes residing in Medina(Saudi Arab),and they were at liberty to practise their religion. They were given equal rights. This is the true Islam. Islam respects all religions and doesn't intend to harm any sect. May this event prove to be a great success in removing misconceptions about peaceful religion,Islam.
