The Amir of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'ah, Dr. Mash'ud Adenrele Fashola, is offering a solution to the terrible traffic situation in Lagos state.
According to All Africa, his solution is for the state government to create bicycle paths.
"Creation of bicycle paths is the practice even in advanced societies. Lagos State and its people are suffering because of the traffic jam. If we can solve the challenge of the traffic jam, we would have solved 90 per cent of Lagosians' problems.
"No matter what we achieve, we spend hours in traffic. We lose enormous man-hours and productivity is low. We inhale poisonous smoke in traffic jam. We are having high incidence of hypertension and diabetes because we sit for too long in traffic; no exercise. It is killing us. We need to do something drastic. We need to create bicycle paths. Bicycle paths would be short-cuts.
"When you look at roads, you are deceived. The roads are wide. If you are going from here, the road can take you round and round but bicycle paths can take right of way from even private premises and within 10 minutes, you can reach your place of work by bicycle."
In order to prove his point, he spoke on how traffic prevents Lagosians from using the Ahmadiyya Hospital in Apapa.
"The Apapa hospital is in fact our number one hospital but traffic jam is obstructing patients from going to that hospital, otherwise it is the best hospital that we have. It has all the equipment, as we get assistance from our international headquarters."
Do you think the creation of bicycle paths will reduce traffic in Lagos state?
