MILWAUKEE (WKOW)-- Members of the Milwaukee Muslim community are speaking out, after 23-year-old Samy Hamzeh was arrested for plotting a mass shooting, in the name of Islam.

According to police, Hamzeh planned an attack on a Masonic temple in downtown Milwaukee and claimed it would be in the name of the Muslim community. However, Rizwan Ahmad, the spokesman for the Milwaukee Chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, condemned the plot and says he's grateful the FBI thwarted the plan.

Ahmad says his group recently started the campaign “True Islam and the Extremists Campaign” to educate Muslims and non-Muslims about real Islamic beliefs, and distinguish them from extremists. Ahmad says it's a national campaign, that he never expected to hit so close to home.

“It makes it [the campaign] more important,” Ahmad said. “There's a lot of work that needs to be done and the extremists out there are these people who have perverted view of Islam, are very minor group, they're a minority. And it gives us an opportunity as the people who represent the majority of Muslims to come out and say this is not the true meaning of Islam.”

Ahmad says his group was planning a true Islam event for March or April, but they are now working to move that date up in the wake of the arrest.
