USA: #TrueIslam — Local Muslim community tries to counter ISIS messages

"If all of the mosques in the United States were to sign on to the True Islam message, every single youth would get the message that this is True Islam and whatever ISIS is doing on the internet or social media or whatever is false."

There's a growing effort among Muslims to counter the messages of extremism that ISIS has been so successful at spreading.

This counter-attack of ideas is taking place in local mosques and on social media, as nations struggle with how to stop young people from radicalizing.

"One of the tenants of being a Muslim is being loyal to one's country," Alam Ali, spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, told a gathering at a mosque in Monroe, Saturday.

Local Muslims met with Rep. Susan DelBene to localize a complicated international conversation about how to counter mistrust of Muslims as ISIS expands its web of terror.

"The Ahmadiyya community fundamentally believes in spreading love for all and hatred for none," said Ali.

Perhaps more important than the in-person meetings is the social media movement, which will reach far more young Muslims than any local gathering.

"#ISIS is not and never will be #TrueIslam," reads one of the tweets by @TrueIslamUSA.

There's also an online pledge to reject all forms of terrorism and religious violence.

"If all of the mosques in the United States were to sign on to the True Islam message, every single youth would get the message that this is True Islam and whatever ISIS is doing on the internet or social media or whatever is false," said Ali.

While there have been no prominent attacks or crimes against Muslims in Western Washington, local True Islam organizers say their community cannot get complacent.

"These misunderstandings always arise and we want to protect that what we have in the Pacific Northwest, we want to preserve what we have here," said Ali.
