Having made a look & see visit to the site of a proposed new mosque in Scunthorpe, councillors who sit on North Lincolnshire Council's planning committee are to meet this week and decide whether to give the go-ahead.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association is seeking to build in Cliff Closes Road, with sleeping quarters on the upper floors for a religious leader. This will include demolition of an existing mosque.

A number of objections were received to this planning application, many pointing to problems caused by the number of vehicles visiting the site.

Classifying this as an application of "significant public interest" the council placed it before the planning committee last month.

Councillors decided to make a site visit before reconvening at Scunthorpe Civic Centre on Wednesday, February 10, from 2pm, when a decision will be made.

The council's planning department has prepared a detailed report for councillors to consider ahead of the meeting.

"It is concluded that the proposed development would not be detrimental to the character of the site or locality, would not harm the living conditions of any neighbouring occupier and would not be of detriment to highway safety or efficiency," says the report.

Planning staff are therefore recommending that the committee should grant permission.

Wednesday's meeting at the Civic Centre is open to interested members of the public.
