If individuals on a local level can build bridges, it is a catalyst for the larger sections, and finally, worldwide.

Unity is a general word we use, but if we really reflect on the meaning, it is a powerful pathway to peace. The Khalifa (Caliph) of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, his Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, talks extensively on this subject and his addresses are compiled in the book, "Pathway to Peace." When I reflect on unity, I think it is a need of the time.

Following the Brussels attacks, I believe the way out of violent extremism is peaceful discourse. To get away from hatred and misunderstanding, we need love and toleration.

The way to achieve such a feat will take unity of the whole of mankind. Let's forget race, political views, gender, and religion that differentiate us and focus on what unites us -- humanity. If individuals on a local level can build bridges, it is a catalyst for the larger sections, and finally, worldwide.

This will allow unity to exist, the common core that makes us human. It is terrible that the New York Times quoted the French prime minister, "We are at war", when the aim should be to deal with the perpetrators and spread peace. This can eradicate violent, uneducated terror at the root. As these attacks occurred, let's not forget the violence in several other parts of the world, like Turkey, which demand worldwide attention also.
