DE PERE - The Oshkosh chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association will host an educational event on Islam at the Brown County Kress Family Branch Library on Saturday.
The Holy Quran exhibition will run from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the downtown De Pere library, 333 N. Broadway.
Open to all, attendees can stop in at any time to learn about Islam, the Quran and other aspects of one of the largest religions in the world.
“The goal is to educate,” said Iftekhar Ahmad, assistant national director of outreach for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association. “The purpose of this is not to spread Islam or to convert people, things like that. This is purely educational. We just want to have better relationships with the people that we live with.”
Organizers also want to dispel common myths and misunderstandings about Islam. Similarities between Islam and other major religions will be discussed.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is hosting more than 60 of these events in the United States this year.
“(It’s) an informal atmosphere where people can come, see what we have, ask some questions,” Ahmad said. “We’ll have a lot of literature there, a lot of things people can read, and people are going to find a lot of commonalities” with other religions.
Ahmad said the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is one of the oldest American Muslim organizations, established in Chicago in the early 1900s. It is comprised of thousands of boys and young men up to age 40.
The organization is part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a sect within Islam that has millions of members in more than 200 countries.
