Tanzanian Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Ayaz Bestowed With Honours By Queen Elizabeth


Sir Ayaz was a very active member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at in Dar es Saalam, Tanga, Morogoro and Kagera. In 1964, he organised the Jama'at in the west lake region and established a Jama'at centre in Bukoba.

Former Secretary General of the Tanzania Common wealth Society, Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Ayaz, has been honoured with the award of Knight Commander of the Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen.

The London Gazette reported recently that, "The Queen has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of Her Majesty's Birthday and on the advice of Her Majesty's Tuvalu Ministers, to give orders for the promotion in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and honored Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad Ayaz with K.B.E. As a Knight, Iftikhar Ayaz has the title SIR. As such, he will be from now on referred to as Sir Iftikhar Ahmad Ayaz. Dr Sir Iftikhar Ayaz came to Tanzania, then Tanganyika from Qadian, India, in 1946.

He settled with his father in Tanga and received his secondary education in Tanga. He received his teacher's training in Nairobi, Kenya and joined the government service in 1958.

He served the department of education as a deputy inspector of English medium schools and later as district education officer in Dar es Salaam. In 1963, he was posted to the western region as a regional inspector of schools.

He was later appointed as the chairman of teacher education, English panel. He also served as a senior lecturer and senior curriculum officer at the University of Dar es Salaam.

In 1981, he joined the centre on integrated rural development for Africa which was established in Arusha. In 1969 at the instruction of Hadrat Khalifatul Masih III (rh) he renounced his British citizenship and took Tanzanian citizenship.

He was sent by the government of Tanzania for higher education to Britain where he attained a master's degree. He was later seconded to the Commonwealth Institute and on his return to Tanzania, he founded the Tanzania Commonwealth Society, which promoted Commonwealth solidarity and teaching about Commonwealth in schools.

Sir Ayaz was a very active member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at in Dar es Saalam, Tanga, Morogoro and Kagera. In 1964, he organised the Jama'at in the west lake region and established a Jama'at centre in Bukoba.

He also established the Jama'at centre in Arusha and served the cause of Ahmadiyyat in East Africa in many ways. He was well known in government circles for his services as the training commissioner for boy scouts, secretary general of the Tanzania Commonwealth Society and many other organisations.

His father, Mukhtar Ahmad Ayaz was a pioneer member of the Jama'at and he contributed passionately to the progress and development of the Jama'at in East Africa. He passed away in 1969 and was buried in Dar es Salaam.
