A counter-terrorism campaign piloted in the heart of the capital is bringing its fight against extremism to a Newham shopping hub.
Project Griffin, an awareness-raising platform that trains people how to spot extremism, will host a seminar at the Vue Cinema in Westfield, Stratford.
Anti-terror writer Shahid Mursaleen, who tackles terror from Minhaj-ul-Quran in Romford Road, Forest Gate, welcomed the project’s extension to east London.
“The more people involved in this the better,” he said. “We’ll help the police in any way we can.
“We support campaigns like this because they create awareness and help tackle extremism.”
The awareness day, which is a joint venture between the Metropolitan Police Service and City of London Police, will feature a two-hour talk from specialist officers.
Talks will cover hostile reconnaissance, the current threat of terrorism, how to deal with suspicious items and what to do in the event of an attack.
Newham Ahmadiyya Association has also backed the free event, which is on Tuesday from 9am, with president Basharat Ahmad saying extremism has no place in London and emphasised his minority Muslim group’s motto: “Love for all, hatred for none.”
“We welcome anything that can establish peace in our society and harmony between people of different faiths,” he said. “Our community is against all types of terrorist activity and anything that creates disturbance in this land.”
Though the awareness day is open to people of all religions, Basharat also emphasised that the association of extremism with Islam was the result of lies about his religion, which he maintains is peaceful.
“Muhammad told his soldiers not to kill women or children and not not defile corpses,” he said. “These people who say terrorism is Islamic are wrong – there’s nothing that supports it in the Qur’an or in Islamic history.
“In our religion there’s no place for any terrorism.”
Light refreshments will be served after the talk, which is expected to finish no later than 11.30am.
