Ahmadiyya Muslims in Keighley are backing an appeal to boost educational opportunities for blind and visually impaired people in Gaza.
A KEIGHLEY group is urging residents to get behind a campaign to help blind people living in one of the world's poorest and most beleaguered communities.
Keighley Ahmadiyya Muslim Association is promoting a 'Thunderclap' online appeal to raise funds for a special IT laboratory for visually-impaired people in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
Thunderclap is designed to make use of social media outlets, such as Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr, to draw more people's attention to a good cause or other issue of public concern.
This latest appeal for Gaza is being run by the Humanity First group, which was first set up in the UK by the then leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community more than 20 years ago.
A spokesman for the campaign explained: "Giving sight to anyone is something special.
"It's difficult to imagine how the world is when you are visually impaired.
"There are thousands of visually impaired in Gaza, with limited resources in the poorest areas.
"The blind and visually impaired can be a forgotten group in society and even more so in developing countries, such as Palestine.
"Educational opportunities for them are scarce and they can be significantly behind technologically.
"This further hinders their role in the workplace and there is widespread bias against them and a lack of understanding of their capabilities. These factors result in a marginalised, dependent group, who are often hidden from the rest of society."
An online link to enable people to donate to the appeal will go live at 9am on Tuesday.
