Ahok Says He is Ready to Face Blasphemy Investigation

Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Thursday (13/10) that he is ready to face an investigation by the National Police's criminal investigation unit over alleged blasphemy.

At least three groups have reported Basuki for defamation after he quoted a Quranic verse during a speech in Kepulauan Seribu, Jakarta.

The video in which Basuki said that no one should manipulate verses from the Quran for political gain went viral earlier this month and has angered some clerics and Muslim leaders.

"This is a state of law. If they have reported me, just let the legal processes take place," Basuki told reporters after inaugurating the Bhinneka children's park in South Jakarta.

Ahok has earlier apologized to Muslims for having quoted the verse, adding he had no intention to insult Islam.

He said he will respect the legal processes and the blasphemy investigation.

"We have a law on blasphemy. We have this legal base, so let the law enforcers follow up [on the case]," the governor said.
