ISLAMABAD – Two people were arrested on charges of blasphemy for burning pages of the Quran in eastern Pakistan, the police told EFE on Friday.

The incident comes at a time when Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law is once again in the spotlight owing to an appeal to the Supreme Court by Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, who was sentenced to death for insulting Islam.

The arrests were made after local religious leader Mohammed Imtiaz on Wednesday [allegedly] saw a youth burning pages of an old copy of a Quran, said Jaseem Ahmed, police spokesperson of Kot Radha Kishan village, where the incident took place.

The 18-year-old man claimed he was following the instructions of his teacher at the village mosque.

The teacher argued that the Quran itself suggests discarding damaged pages of the Holy book by burning them.

However, after consulting with a local expert, Imtiaz decided to report the 18-year-old and his teacher to the police, which arrested them.

The controversial blasphemy law was established during the British period to prevent religious clashes, but its abuse became possible following amendments to the law in the 1980s by Dictator Zia ul Haq.

The conservative Pakistani society is very sensitive to blasphemy and profanity regarding the Quran.
