The Ahmadiyya Muslim community of Lloydminster inaugurated its local mosque Sunday, with a special visit from the group’s worldwide leader and caliph, his Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmed.
“We purchased it (the mosque) in 2014, started the renovation project, which completed earlier this year and once it was completed we sent out a request to the head of our community who is visiting Canada,” said Tariq Azeem, Imam and missionary with the local Ahmadiyya community.
“We said that it would be an honour if he visits and inaugurates our mosque and he graciously accepted.”
The mosque, which is located on 50 Street, used to be an old shop and Azeem said when it was purchased there was a lot of work to do to make it a suitable place of worship.
Before the building was bought the local Ahmadiyya Muslims had to rent out different places or meet at one another’s houses to have their religious discussions and prayer sessions, but with the new mosque, Azeem said it’s much easier for the whole community to gather in one spot.
Now the group also has a place where it can have educational sessions, children’s classes and anything else that may have been too inconvenient before it had a central location.
And having its caliph attend the inauguration of the mosque to top it all off is a great honour in itself, Azeem said.
“It feels amazing to have our caliph, his Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, visit our town and visit our mosque,” said Azeem.
“He’s the religious leader and the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, there’s a spiritual connection between the leader of the community and the followers, so because of that connection we feel really honoured and are extremely excited for him to visit our mosque, meet with our members and inaugurate this space.”
The official inauguration took place in the Prairie Room at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds.
