Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad doesn't think election threats will transform into action
The leader of the world's Ahmadiyya Muslims was in Calgary on Wednesday and says he doesn't think there's anything to fear from a Donald Trump presidency.
Caliph Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad believes Trump's talk about a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims" was simply a campaign tactic.
"I'm sure that what he was saying, it will never be implemented," said the Caliph, who's on the last leg of a six-week tour of Canada.
He said Trump's acceptance speech about unity shows he shouldn't be feared.
"His attitude has completely changed overnight," said Ahmad.
In a One-on-One interview with the CBC's Peter Mansbridge last month, the Caliph said he feared Trump's stance on Muslims could lead to a civil war in the United States.
This week he said Muslims are likely more scared than they need to be.
Ahmad was in Canada promoting peace and condemning extremism. He met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this month.
Maliha Shahid — in Calgary for the visit — said the Caliph's message is timely.
"A lot of what Trump says is a lot on the extreme side as well, so I think the message of the Caliph is especially important in today's time."
