Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, has warned that the real danger in the blasphemy allegation against Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama is that certain groups might claim it as a reason to establish an Islamic state in Indonesia.
"This [case] indicates the presence of groups that want to turn the republic into an Islamic state. This is a serious threat and very dangerous," Rumadi Ahmad, the head of NU's educational division, said during a seminar in Jakarta on Wednesday (23/11).
Rumadi claimed these groups choose to deny Indonesia's secular roots and do not believe in the Pancasila — the country's official ideology.
"We shouldn't be worried about the blasphemy allegation, we should be worried about these groups," Rumadi said.
According to him, the Nov. 4 anti-Ahok protest was a show of force by these groups, and indicated their increasing confidence.
Rumadi stressed the importance of recognizing and tolerating diversity, which Indonesia's founding fathers had put to good use to unite so many ethnic and religious communities in the country.
"Back then, diversity was the one thing that unites us. Now some people are trying to use it to divide people. This is extremely dangerous," Rumadi said.
