It’s almost Remembrance Day, which means many of us will be pinning our poppies to our lapels.
It also means that it’s that time of year when everyone suddenly claims that Muslims want to ‘ban’ poppies, or that poppies ‘can’t be worn’ in areas with large Muslim communities.
The usual stuff – and this year, like every other year, it’s total bull.
In fact, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has been out in the cold and rain today selling poppies for the Royal British Legion.
Volunteer Abdul Ghalib Khan told BBC Asian Network’s Nihal that the organisation is aiming to raise around £20,000 for servicemen and veterans in the UK.
And AMYA tweeted that more than 600 people have gone out selling poppies.
The Royal British Legion community fundraiser co-ordinator Deborah Armantrading said: ‘AMYA have been crucial in raising funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for several years participating in mass collections all over the UK.
‘The Legion are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all of the volunteers.
‘We enjoy working with AMYA as they are dedicated and passionate about their charity work, and the Poppy Appeal would not be the same without their help.’
Mirza Waqas Ahmad, National President of AMYA said: ‘The Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh) said that to love ones country is part of your faith. This is true Islam.
‘As Muslims it is our responsibility to show loyalty to our country of residence and work for the betterment of our country.
‘We therefore hope that our participation is a clear indication of our desire for peace and unity between all peoples, nations and religions.’
