Canada: Second annual Run for Milton set to raise funds for hospital

The hospital foundation is in the home stretch of its $30-million fundraiser for the facility’s expansion. Last year’s inaugural Run for Milton raised $5,000 for Milton District Hospital.

Get ready to lace up those sneakers and run in the name of charity for Milton District Hospital (MDH).

Plans are in the works for the second annual Run for Milton, organized by the Islamic organization the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, to raise funds for MDH’s expansion set to open this fall.

The run is scheduled for Mother’s Day — Sunday, May 14 starting at 9 a.m. at the velodrome — and will include a five-kilometre walk, jog or run, along with a one-kilometre family option.

With giving back to the community and those in need, along with taking care of the elderly and sick being among the values Islam promotes, race director Shaazia Saeed said that “Run for Milton is our journey of values.”

The sentiment was echoed by others in attendance at the event launch on Tuesday, March 21 at MDH.

“This is our way of putting our faith into action by having such a run,” said Maqbool Sheikh, Run for Canada’s director of advocacy. “We invite fellow Miltonians to come out as one community and support such a great cause.”

The organization holds similar runs across the country, with 95 per cent of them benefitting health care, noted Sheikh.

And since growth is showing no sign of slowing down in Milton, Mayor Gord Krantz said he hopes the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at will continue supporting the future growth of MDH.

“Health and well-being, that’s really what it’s all about, and that’s what this run is certainly supporting,” he said.

Milton District Hospital Foundation (MDHF) chair Brian Penman said the run’s proceeds would help support the acquisition of some 7,000 pieces of equipment needed for the 330,000-square-foot hospital expansion.

He went on to extend his gratitude to the organization behind the event.

“Thank you for being part of not only our community, but the hospital,” he said.

Saeed said she’s confident the collaboration between the Town of Milton, MDHF and Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at will be a continued success.

“Please join us on May 14 and make it a successful event,” she said.

Those interested in participating can register online at www.runformilton.com or in person May 1 and 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Milton Sports Centre. Registration will also be held at the velodrome May 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., May 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. and May 14 (race day) from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

The hospital foundation is in the home stretch of its $30-million fundraiser for the facility’s expansion. Last year’s inaugural Run for Milton raised $5,000 for MDH.
