This Muslim-American whole-heartedly condemns the recent spate of bomb threats and vandalism at synagogues and Jewish cemeteries in various parts of the country. The Prophet Muhammad taught his followers to protect the places of worship and to honor the deceased of all faiths. In fact, on a notable occasion while sitting among a gathering of his companions, the Prophet briskly stood up in reverence to a Jewish funeral procession that was passing through and thus imbibed by his action the lesson of mutual respect.
Stemming from this golden principle, members of my Ahmadiyya Muslim Community responded to the recent anti-Semitic crimes by reaching out to our Jewish brethren. One of our members, a Marine veteran, sent a viral tweet, “If your synagogue or Jewish cemetery needs someone to stand guard, count me in. Islam requires it. #MuslimMarine.”
Members of our Philadelphia Chapter traveled to a local Jewish cemetery and spent the day turning upright tombstones that had been knocked down. In the wake of wanton hatred, these acts of solidarity are what will really make our country great. The true Islam expects nothing less.
