IMAMS will be urged to preach in English and could be told to publish sermons online under new measures designed to wipe out extremism in the UK
The government’s counter-terrorism force fears that preaching in foreign languages causes divisions between Muslim and British societies.
According to the Daily Telegraph, among rules planned in new anti-terror proposals could be tougher legislation for preachers from abroad.
Currently, imams from outside the European Union who visit Britain have to prove they can speak English before a visa is granted.
However a survey of 300 mosques in 2007 found that just eight per cent of Imams were born in the UK, and that only six per cent spoke English as their first language.
A source told the Daily Telegraph: “If imams are speaking in another language it makes it far harder to know if radicalisation is taking place.”
Ministers also could instruct them to publish English versions of sermons online – after being inspired by some Middle Eastern countries which are doing the same thing.
