A Yorkshire Peace Conference entitled The Role of Women in Integration, Peace and Security was organised by the Yorkshire Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association (AMWA) in Baitul Tauheed Mosque, Spaines Road, Huddersfield on Sunday 19 March 2017.

Over30 guests including Paula Sherriff MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton, Councillor Musarrat Khan,Councillor Viv Kendrick, Councillor Judith Hughes and Angela Williams, Assistant Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, attended.  They were joined by various charity and faith representatives from throughout the region.

Mrs Nusrat Uddin, the local Huddersfield North President of AMWA, delivered the welcome address and explained the activities of Yorkshire AMWA and their contributions to raising the status of women and their duties to humanity.

The main presentation was made by Mrs Rashda Ahmad, Regional Outreach Co-ordinator for Yorkshire AMWA.  She stressed the importance of women being recognised for the contributions they make to society, the meaningful participation of women in all forms of activities at local and national level and ways to address the under representation of women.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes that the Messiah as prophesised in many scriptures came in the form of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in India in 1835 and it is they who are doing their best to promote peace, love and harmony in the world.  As moderate Muslims who believe in the Messiah the community continues to advocate the equality, education and empowerment of women.

The current Caliph (spiritual leader) of the Ahmadiyya Community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, has stated that educating women is the key to preventing the spread of radicalisation.Islam requires all Muslims to be loyal and law abiding to the country they are residing in and the motto of the Ahmadiyya Community is Love For All Hatred For None.

Mrs Nasira Ghuman, regional representative of the UK based Charity Humanity First presented a report on the current activities of the Charity including the “Water For Life” project which aims to bring clean drinking water to communities and villages in some of the most remote and hostile conditions in the developing world.

Paula Sherriff MP, in her role as Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, spoke about her own struggle and difficulties to be recognised in politics. She stated that women in politics still remain under represented.  She also discussed her various campaigns on women’s health issues such as the “tampon” tax.

Angela Williams spoke her about her own struggles and difficulties in the police force over the last 26 years.  She acknowledged that women in the police have come a long way but that there was much more work that needed to be done to encourage more women to join the police force.

• Sarah Shaw – Director of Clinical Services at Kirkwood Hospice
• Lyndsey Richardson – Community Fundraiser at Kirkwood Hospice
• Stacey Rhodes and Lucy Rogers from Macmillan Cancer Support in West Yorkshire
• Eileen Webb and Helen Henson from Destitute Asylum Seekers Huddersfield(DASH)
• Catherine Martin from Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice
• Rosie Corrigan – Former Mayor of Selby and current ‎Senior Parliamentary Assistant to Tracy Brabin MP 
• Elizabeth Cash and Lindsey Robertshaw from Dewsbury Minster
• Councillor Josie Farrar from Normanton Town Council
• Judith Greenwood from BatleySmile CIC
• Emily Warrilow - Kirklees youth councillor

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs Khalida Maryam, the local Huddersfield South President of AMWA.

The meeting was presided over by Dr Amtul Shafee, Regional President of Yorkshire AMWA who stressed the importance of women’s education and thanked the guests for taking the time to attend the Peace Conference.

All guests were presented with a gift bag about the community and the meeting concluded with a silent prayer followed by lunch.
