A British imam fighting terrorism in the UK says sanctions should be slapped on Muslims suspected of being radical.
Abdul Arif travels the country spreading the true meaning of Islam to youngsters and said yesterday his heart was “bleeding tears on two accounts” after seven were killed at London Bridge .
He added: “Firstly, my city and fellow Londoners have been targeted and suffered at the hands of these barbaric savages, and secondly, these savages have tarnished the face of my peaceful religion.”
He said passports should be taken off those on the security service’s radar.
“The responsibility of the government is the safety of its people. They need more than surveillance, there needs to be action taken,” he said.
“We have got to have restrictions within the society.
“That can mean that you might have to introduce sanctions and in some cases take away their passports.”
Abdul, 27, was one of a number of Muslims who travelled to show solidarity with Londoners after the city’s second murderous terror attack this year.
He said there were “no words” to express how he felt when he learned the attackers screamed “this is for Allah” as they tore into revellers on Saturday night.
Abdul is head of education for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which works to fight terrorism in Britain by educating young people and visiting mosques across the UK.
Sending a message to wannabe terrorists living in Britain, he said: “Go and read your religion. Whatever you have heard, it’s hearsay. Go and read the Quran yourselves.”
Abdul, who also teaches other Imams, said solving the problem was not down to the Muslim community alone, but to everybody living in the UK.
“Theirs (the terrorists’) is a twisted form of an ideology that’s sprouted.
“The Muslim community needs to be more transparent. This is something that our communities have been good at. We’ve opened our mosques across the country - it’s about integrating.
“We make the youth we speak to feel a part of society - we have them swear an oath to this country. They do not feel separated from society and there’s not a single one who has become radicalised. We need more of this.
“British values are about looking after your neighbour, and that’s also what Islam promotes. That is not expressed by the so-called Muslims who carry out these attacks.
“Today we stand united with the great city of London. The social fabric of London has so many tiers.
“We’re different creeds, colours, classes and genders - all of which make this city great.
“It was build by everyone coming together and that’s the right message to spread now.”
