Canada: Principles of world peace topic at Ahmadiyya peace symposium in Lloydminster

"If we only do these programs within our community it won’t help the earth, the planet, it won’t help to stop the nuclear war to come … that is why we arrange these kinds of Peace Symposiums around the world”

"[H]ow can religious communities contribute to the overall benefit of society and humanity within Canada”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Lloydminster held a Peace Symposium on religion, freedom, and peace, with the main topic being “Golden Principles of World Peace.”

On Friday, many people came out to listen to panelists Mansoor Azeem, Iman with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, and Jeffrey Thomas, who represented the Christian community.

“The world is heading towards a path of destruction where it will have a massacre and probably world war … so we need to warn the leaders and we need to warn the people that if you continue to head this way, it will only end in destruction,” said Azeem.

The symposium aimed to promote harmony within different faiths, and showcase while there can be some differences, there are still many similarities.

“Promoting harmony and peaceful(ness) among our communities is necessary because we want people to hear our voice right now, because if they don’t hear it right now, it will probably be too late for them,” said Azeem.

He noted it takes more than just a small community to make a difference. He gave an example of if one community plants trees it won’t save the planet, but it takes multiple communities to come together.

“We need other people to know these are the responsibilities for other people to follow. If we only do these programs within our community it won’t help the earth, the planet, it won’t help to stop the nuclear war to come … that is why we arrange these kinds of Peace Symposiums around the world,” explained Azeem.

When these types of events are held, Thomas said he likes to be able to come and give the Christian perspective to the conversation.

“I think the question the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Lloydminster is constantly asking is very important, how can religious communities contribute to the overall benefit of society and humanity within Canada,” said Thomas.

Thomas said talking about the golden principals of world peace was something many people didn’t have to look too far when it came to tensions.

“It’s a conversation … that is going on in governmental levels and even in academics. I think it’s an important question, and a religious voice contributes a unique sense to it,” he said.

Thomas added showcasing harmony within different religions was important as it will aide communities like Lloydminster.

“It’s incumbent of each one of us as an individual within the city to do what we can to participate. One of the ways we can do that is to create a sense of togetherness and mutual purpose and understanding, to alleviate the problems that come from a breakdown in society,” he said.

This is the first symposium in which Azeem took part in Lloydminster, and he said it was a good first time for him.

“Next time we will try on a better scale, a bigger scale, so that more people will listen,” said Azeem
