As a hijab-wearing Muslim woman, I am quite used to people asking me questions about my hijab, my religion and practices. I appreciate them for broaching these questions and feel honored to answer them. The best part is the twinkle in their eyes, the nod of understanding that follows our conversation. Just through simple conversation, we connect and find common grounds.
Through personal experience, I have found that interfaith dialogue is paramount in today’s environment. Everywhere we look there are walls being raised to separate “us” and “them”. Only when we take the step to understand each other, can we realize that there is only “us”. Just like family members are not all the same, each has their own personality and traits; yet we not only live with them, we love and support each other. Similarly, we are all human beings who not only have to live together but can do so in a very loving and accepting environment.
I am truly blessed to belong to the Oshkosh community where people make an effort to remove these divides, where people are committed to educate themselves about the diversity within us. Once again on Nov. 2, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association of Oshkosh held a ladies event where speakers from different faiths shared their views from their faith’s perspective on “Justice In An Unjust World”. The event took place at Qamar Mosque in Oshkosh with about 70 attendees from across various faiths. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all those who came, and helped move our community one step closer to harmony.
