UK: Walthamstow Mosque hosts interfaith gathering teaching people life-saving skills in case of emergency

A two-hour workshop was held in a mosque to teach people how to save someone’s life in case of an emergency.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Associations of Erskine Road, Walthamstow hosted the ‘Learn to Save a Life’ event on behalf of Waltham Forest Faith Forum.

The course presented by Sheila and Eddy Williams of the British Heart Foundation focused on administering CPR, stemming bleeding, spotting signs of a heart attack and helping someone who is choking.

Revd Cllr Paul Braham of Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue, Revd Dan Copperwheat from Greenleaf Road Baptist Church in Walthamstow and Arif Khan, imam at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association were among those who took part.

Wendy Smith, chairman of Waltham Forest Faith Forum said: "The course was a brilliant way to bring people of different faiths together and for the wider community to be aware of the importance of interfaith activities and to be able to participate.

"We decided to put on this course after concerns were raised that in gatherings at places of worship a medical emergency might arise and some of us might not know how to deal with it.

“Everyone should know how to save a life and we would urge everyone to consider taking part in a course such as this.”

Revd Copperwheat added: “It was a pleasure to meet everyone and I am very encouraged by all positive relationships among different faiths.”
