It’s a giving time of the season and for the second straight year, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Lloydminster chapter made a substantial donation to help out The Olive Tree.
“It’s so nice to know other groups in the community support what we do, we are very appreciative of the donation,” said Becky Schille, director, The Olive Tree.
The local Ahmadiyya Muslim community collected more than 1,400 pounds of food.
During the holiday season, Schille said these types of donations are always needed.
“December is a big month for us. We are very busy with all of our programs and definitely an increase in the need for food, so the timing is great,” she explained.
The donation goes towards helping the multiple food programs such as the soup kitchen, schools, and more.
The Olive Tree serves a wide range of people around the holidays including 100-125 at the free community meal, 30 at the mom’s program and 70-75 at the seniors’ luncheon.
“As Christmas time is approaching fast, it is a time for happiness, it is a time for joy and we wanted to donate food for the less fortunate as well so they can enjoy Christmas, and no soul shall remain hungry on Christmas,” said Mansoor Azeem, Imam/Missionary for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Canada, Lloydminster Chapter.
All of the food was collected by their own community by going around and having the youth ask for donations.
“All Muslims know it is their duty to feed the hungry, so that is why there has never been a problem in asking,” said Azeem.
Getting the youth involved with the donations and collecting them was a vital part of what they do.
“They were really enjoying collecting the food,” said Azeem. “This is all the youth, and especially the kids. Six hundred pounds of food has been gathered by just the kids … they were really enjoying it, they wanted to be part of it. They were saying we should do it twice a year.”
Next year, Azeem said they are trying to go bigger with their donation in hopes of donating 3,000 pounds.
The community also donated $1,450 to Humanity First Canada.
As for what’s next for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Lloydminster, Azeem said they are thinking of doing a run for the Lloydminster Hospital.
People can still help out with The Olive Tree by donating food, which they are always short of, such as microwavable meals, pasta, and sauces, as well as canned vegetables.
“We accept those donations year round, they can drop them off at the thrift store anytime,” said Schille.
