Some people ignorantly think that Islam teaches segregation or discrimination. But the truth is that Islam teaches us not to divide people by gender, race, or religion.

As an Ahmadi Muslim my motto is “Love for all, Hatred for None”. I have love for everyone regardless of any sort of differences.

The Holy Qur’an states that our diversity is a sign of God, “And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your tongues and colors. In that surely are Signs for those who possess knowledge” (30:23). Qur’an further makes it clear, “O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female; and We have made you into tribes and sub-tribes that you may recognize one another. Verily, the most honorable among you, in the sight of Allah, is he who is the most righteous among you…” (49:14).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized equality for all. During his farewell address, the Prophet (pbuh) said, “An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; except by piety and good actions”. Islam’s concept of equality is beautifully witnessed at the time of the annual pilgrimage-Hajj. This is unique to Islam.

We are getting closer to Martin Luther King Jr Day, which will be celebrated as a federal holiday on January 15th to honor the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. I personally find his message to be very similar to Islam’s message of equality. I like that Dr. King firmly believed that violence was not the answer to any of the problems going around in the world. Martin Luther King’s activism was profound for the current time in the U.S. but Islam had already set forth message of equality 1400 years ago.
