A 12-year-old Calmar girl launched the Hearts 4 Haiti campaign — selling paper hearts to raise cash for Haitian relief instead of candy grams for Valentine’s Day.
Cadence Mutch’s efforts have inspired other schools in Calgary, Massachusetts and South Carolina to get on board.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Mutch, who has helped raise $800 so far for the Canadian Red Cross.
A Red Cross spokeswoman said she was brought to tears when a pair of four-year-old girls donated a jar of change recently to the Calgary office. Two 10-year-old boys also raised $400 by knocking on doors.
“I think it’s amazing that people whether they be young or old, have in so many ways been touched by what has happened in Haiti,” said Marie Jurcevic.
Edmonton businesses are also reaching out to help after the 7.0-magnitude quake struck Jan. 12.
The Gas Pump Night Club, 10166 114 St., is hosting a Superbowl fundraiser next Sunday. Tickets are $20, with all proceeds going to the disaster relief charity Humanity First, and include snacks and a steak dinner.
“We had to do something. We know people are going to be coming out anyway and a lot of people spend a lot of money around Superbowl,” said manager Sarah Ireland.
Last Wednesday, residents of Wabasca-Desmarais — about 373 km north of Edmonton — raised $13,000 for Haiti during a Bingo and bake sale.
As of Friday, the Canadian Red Cross has raised a total of $83.4 million. Local figures were not available.
