The second Disaster Response Team consisting of 21 members from Canada, USA and UK arrived in Port-Au-Prince. There were 2 vehicle break downs and some delays due to security concerns, however, the team arrived safely at the HF camp in Port-au-Price. The Medical team is also reviewing demand for various nearby hospitals and will be providing support to with specialized surgical specialists. Our camp was able to help over 60 patients on Sunday morning whilst the new team was setting up.
The team reported that there is a dire need to deal with post-operative care, particularly for amputees. There is still a lot of work to treat infected open fractures and patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma. The team continues to work closely with the UN and local authorities.
In Canada, Humanity First held a very successful Radio Telethon on CIAO 530 AM raising over $16,000 in less than two hours. After the show the host of another local Radio station met the team and was very impressed with our work and said: “we salute you for what you are doing”.
