Members of the Ahmadiyya community in Auckland will undertake their annual charity walkathon on March 6.
About 25 volunteers representing the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at New Zealand and its core group, Majlis Ansarullah New Zealand (Helpers of Allah) will cover a part of the route from Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush Manukau at 9 am, collecting money in aid of the Royal Foundation for the Blind and Humanity First New Zealand.
Last year the Association collected $2500 for the Royal Foundation for the Blind.
Association President Mohammed Iqbal said the efforts would be doubled this year, since two charitable organisations were involved.
“Humanity First New Zealand is a registered charitable trust engaged in aiding disaster victims, restoring communities in the Pacific,” he said.
Mr Iqbal said the organisation was small, accounting for only 245 members but was keen to promote peace and harmony among all sections of the society.
He said the Majlis Ansarullah New Zealand (Helpers of Allah), an auxiliary arm of the community, decided to contribute to humanity as part of the Organisation’s global commemoration of the 100 years of Khilafat (Succession) in 2009.
“We follow the teaching of Islam to help our people and neighbours first.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was established in 1889 and is today spread over 193 countries with membership of tens of millions of people. Its current international headquarters is in London.
This Islamic organisation believes that the long-awaited Messiah was Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian. He was stated to the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the Divine Guide, whose advent was foretold by Mohammed the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).
Ahmadiyyas believe that “God sent Ahmad like Jesus to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace.”
The Organisation also believes that “Jihad by the sword” has no place in Islam.
