SWEDISH society and all the political parties of Sweden have vehemently opposed a proposed ban on Burqa in the country, terming it a violation of the basic human rights.
This was stated by Naseem Malik, the social democrat leader of Pakistani origin and politician from Kalmar, Sweden, who was talking to The News on telephone from Sweden.
He said there was a great commotion in many countries of Europe, including France and in Denmark, regarding ban on Burqa. However, Swedish society and all political parties, while the social democrats’ position in this regard was quite clear, he said, adding that the party had always favoured freedom of religion, expression and press. He said his role, as the incharge of the integration questions for the social democrats in Kalmar, was to work for the freedom of religion and the respect of religious beliefs. He said his party, Social Democrat, always stood for religious freedom.
Malik Naseem said: “Even our Prime Minister Reinfeldt has now openly announced no to ban on Burqa or any legislation in this regard. In Wednesday’s hearing on the radio Reinfeldt and Social Democrat leader Mona Sahlin debated on a Burqa ban.”
He said a parliamentary commission in France had proposed a law against headscarves in public buildings and transport but Sahlin said ‘no’ to such a ban in Sweden while Reinfeldt expressed himself more carefully, which was open to interpretation but on Thursday, he closed the door on it.
