The Punjab University was the centre of a riot in 2009, with the administration being unable to control the radical Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), a student wing of extremists and militants veiled as a political party Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), despite several clashes between the administration and the party.
Record incidents of violence were reported during the year. The Punjab chief minister and police were also urged to take action but to no avail.
On the January 3, more than a dozen armed members of the IJT attacked the university’s emergency centre and fled after harassing security personnel. University administration sent a formal request for registering an FIR in the New Muslim Town Police Station, while IJT activists also allegedly threatened to kill students.
The IJT attacked the residence of former PU student adviser for the second time on February 3 and pelted it with stones. His wife and child were injured during the incident.
In April, Jamiat activists first hijacked two university buses by threatening and harassing the drivers and conductors. Then later in the month, they also threw empty bottles at senior faculty members and wreaked havoc in front of the vice-chancellor’s office. The same day, the university also decided not to allow the IJT to hold its annual book fair on campus.
In August, the IJT not only attacked PU employees and security guards with batons and iron rods, but also kidnapped three employees of the Centre for Excellence in Solid State Physics. Meanwhile, in a bid to establish their office illegally on campus, Jamiat activists even brought down a wall on December 1.
