SUICIDE AND PLANTED BOMBINGS HAVE KILLED MORE MUSLIMS THAN DRONE ATTACKS

To eradicate these handfuls of terrorists, a collective approach on the national level is a must. The government as well as the opposition needs to get pro-active and alive to the explosive situation prevalent in the country.

Is Karachi turning into yet another Wana of South Waziristan or is it heading to be another stronghold of the terrorists’ Peochar of Swat? There seems nothing to stop it. Despite timely warnings of creeping Talibanazition, the slothful and sluggish administration of the mega-metropolis not only refused to pay any heed to it, but also kept refuting it most scornfully. Almost everyday some seven to eight hundred families keep pouring in the city from up in the north without any screening or identification of the persons, which provided an ample opportunity for the terrorists sneaking into the city in the garb of refuge seekers with all their wherewithal enough to destroy and devastate the industrial and commercial hub of the country.

No wonder that Karachi has been through yet another day of hell, as the city marked Hazrat Imam Hussain’s (RA) chehlum on Friday, while the Ashura carnage masterminds still remain at large.

The attack on a bus-load of Shia mourners in Karachi, as they were traveling to join a procession, was followed just hours later by yet another powerful blast outside the Emergency Department at Jinnah Hospital where the victims had been taken. The toll till now was at least 27 dead and over 100 injured. Twelve of these died in the suicide attack on the bus. Dozens have been injured. The figure for the dead could climb as some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

This was obviously an intricately planned attack. The evil of the minds that conceived it is almost impossible to imagine. An ordinary person cannot even think about targeting people taken to hospital following a bombing. The attackers rank among the truly wicked – lacking in morality, in conscience, in humanity. Ambulance drivers, aid workers, media personnel and possibly medical staff were among those injured. Maulana Abdul Sattar Edhi himself escaped only narrowly.

In the country’s largest city, the blasts have wreaked havoc. Security measures have been insufficient to prevent the terrorists from striking twice. This is despite high security enforced in the city, which has seen violence of various kinds over the past few weeks. The attack shows that the lunatics in the country are determined to inflict havoc. For many years now, despite intense security, we have failed to prevent such attacks. The extensive security put in place on such occasions – as it was in Karachi on Friday – can never be enough to prevent the fanatics, who are determined to kill, sometimes at the cost of their own lives. The other measures needed to prevent such tragic, needless deaths have been ignored for far too many years. Even now there is no systematic effort to fight the hatred that flows like bile through the veins of terrorists and causes blood to spill.

To eradicate these handfuls of terrorists, a collective approach on the national level is a must. The government as well as the opposition needs to get pro-active and alive to the explosive situation prevalent in the country. The politicians of all hues and shades, instead of indulging in mere petty politics, must get together, pool their resources and mobilize the masses against these cabals out to kill and devour the innocents, who if not effectively checked and let them get away in God forbid forcing their way of life and succeed in taking control might land the country to a situation, where Iraq and Afghanistan would look less horrible.
