MARSDEN Park can lay claim to having the biggest, most dedicated Clean Up Australia Day crew in the country.

The Cleanliness Is Part Of Faith team from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has taken part in every Clean Up Australia Day since its inception 20 years ago.

Out of the 7084 clean-up sites registered, it has the largest team (217 members) and has raised the most money.

This year the team covered about 20km of Richmond Rd, Rooty Hill Rd and Hollinsworth Rd to collect about half a truckload of all sorts of rubbish.

Team organiser Murad Khan, said the team was so committed to cleaning they also volunteered to help Blacktown Council target illegal dumping.

He said the team’s loyalty and commitment to the country was what spurred them on.

“It is part of our religion and with this spiritual backing we keep going on and on,” he said.

“Our motto is ‘love for all, hatred for none’, and this goes for the environment as well.”

He said he had noticed an improvement in the amount of rubbish in the area over the years but more needed to be done.

“We used to find burnt-out cars and trailer loads of rubbish dumped during the night, and simply stuff that could easily have been recycled in the area,” he said.

“Now the amount of rubbish is gradually declining due to us being more aware of our environment, being more vigilant and being better educated in what is good and what is harmful to our environment.

“We particularly advise people of diverse backgrounds to change their past habits and better dispose of rubbish.”

He urged anyone who had ever considered joining a Clean Up Australia Day team to visit http://www.cleanup.org.au
