Bangladesh: Christians taken captive by Buddhist extremists

Kidnapping was carried out to force the Christians to return to Buddhism and the captives are expected to be kept in the pagoda for two or three weeks as punishment for having left the Buddhist religion.

According to Compass Direct News reports, members of a Bangladeshi Buddhist group kidnapped three tribal Christians.  Pastor Shushil Jibon Talukder, 55; Bimol Kanti Chakma, 50; and Laksmi Bilas Chakma, 40 are being held in captivity southeastern Bangladesh.

Several witnesses reported the group severely beat the captives after kidnapping them on April 16.


According to the Christian sources, kidnapping was carried out to force the Christians to return to Buddhism and the captives are expected to be kept in the pagoda for two or three weeks as punishment for having left the Buddhist religion.

After taking the Christians of Maddha Lemuchari Baptist Church captive, armed Buddhist extremists forced the congregation to demolish their church building by their own hands.

Pastor Talukder was bludgeoned nearly to death, according to the sources. He had to be taken bystretch er to the pagoda.

As reported by Regional Sub-district Chairman Sona Ratan Chakma, the "three renegade Buddhists" are being kept in the pagoda for religious indoctrination, Compass reported.
