Ahmadiyya Muslim Villagers from Manis Lor, Kuningan, West Java resisted with Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and Police on Wednesday morning and foiled Islamist extremists' attempt to have the mosque sealed.

The disturbance of July 28 occurred when a mosque belonging to the Ahmadiyya Community was attempted to be sealed by the authorities at the behest of Islamic Defenders front and several other extremist Islamist groups in Indonesia.

The angry mob from several extremist factions pelted stones at the mosque and at the Ahmadi residents and the officers fired tear gas in return.

Satpol PP of Kuningan, West Java, attempted a surprise move in the morning hours to seal the An'nur mosque that served as a prayer centre for the members of Ahmadiyah community in Manis Lor area of District Cilimus, Kuningan.

This sealing effort is the second time after the last failed on Monday due to unrest in the area. The sealing of the facility initially went well but quickly people got together and the disturbances erupted.

Angry Ahmadiyya residents resisted the officers of Satpol PP who were joined by the police in helping to seal the facility.

Ahmadiyya residents expressed disappointment with the attempts to re-seal Kuningan regency where they prayed. The last time Satpol PP had sealed the mosque was in 2007 and latter opened by a decreed issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the situation in the village of Manis Lor remains tense and Ahmadiyah residents are still protecting the streets.

A large scale demonstration by joint anti-Ahmadiyah Islamic organizations has been planned for Thursday in the village of Manis Lor.
