Biography: From his beginnings as a student in the Calgary Board of Education, Shahzad Ashraf understands the value and importance of a proper education. He is grateful for the opportunity and privilege of attending a world-class education system, and has since contributed a wealth of knowledge to ensure the education system continues to evolve with the communities of our great city.

Ashraf is dedicated to serving the public. He has supported the education system by proudly serving as a risk analyst and research analyst in the Education Centre for several years. He is also well respected by the local members of the legislative assembly.

Ashraf is proud to call Calgary his home for the past 28 years. Having been a student at Erin Woods Elementary, Ian Bazalgette Jr.High and a graduate of Forest Lawn High School, Ashraf has firsthand experience in the challenges facing our students today.

Ashraf is also a parent of one and understands the need for an education system to develop and evolve in order to compete with the changing world.

His background in Oil and Gas, risk management and government industries has brought him an appreciation of how K-12 education can be the first step towards lifelong learning.

In his spare time, Ashraf has volunteered at various charitable organizations including Calgary Rehabilitation and Drop-in Centres and Humanity First.

Issues:

Sustainable educational funding

In the past, taxpayers had a direct link with the local school board. This, however, has changed and the allocated funding for schools is now put into a centralized location and negotiated and distributed unevenly.

High school completion

Within 3 years of high school, 5% of students do not achieve a diploma (this does not take into consideration students returning for a fourth or fifth year of high school).Research suggests that high school completion is essential to further education, economic advantage and society as a whole. The School Act is under review, I would advocate to extend the required high school completion from 3 years to 5 years.

Board policies should be developed from the ground up and be based on community values.

Who owns public education? You do. The way CBE conducts business must involve greater community, parental and student input. I believe within Calgary, there are communities that have special needs and general CBE policies do not adequately reflect the unique requirements of those communities.

Strengthen student learning through literacy and numeracy.

In a diverse city, I believe that in addition to providing quality teaching and supportive learning models, the CBE must also consider adapting financial literacy to truly create tomorrow`s citizens today.
