Indonesia: Ahmadiyya motto “Love for all, hatred for none” remains unshaken with the events

Preventing a peaceful minority community from performing their fundamental religious right is against any human rights, Islamic or secular principles.

The following was posted as a comment in the Jakarta Post in response to the story about closing of Ahmadiyah building in Pekanbaru. The story opened with the line: "Public pressure prompted the Pekanbaru city administration to finally close down a house of worship owned by followers of the Ahmadiyah sect."

The local council has taken a wrong strategic decision. They think that giving way to mob rule will prevent violence for the moment.

Preventing a peaceful minority community from performing their fundamental religious right is against any human rights, Islamic or secular principles. By closing the mosque, the council has also encouraged the extremists to launch further acts of terror against Ahmadis in future.

Indonesian politicians should come out of their cocoons and fight this menace openly and with clear vision for future.

The extremists are pulling down the progressive forces in the country and consequently the future of Indonesia, the potential in science and technology, the potential in economics, in charity and human services.

Ahmadis are one of the most progressive and dynamic Muslim communities in the world with centres in 195 countries, 15,000 mosques around the world, having global TV channel which is telecast through 9 satellites, having highly educated professionals, doctors, engineers, in fact the first Nobel laureate in science from a Muslim world, Dr. Abdus Salam (1979).

Alienating this kind of community means digging a ditch for the progress of Indonesia. It is up to the Indonesian leaders how they want to lead their nation in future.

As far as Ahmadis are concerned I assure you as an Ahmadi that we will survive this persecution and cope the heat in our stride. We belong to a different class of people with a clear vision for the future and our motto “Love for all, hatred for none” remains unshaken with the events in Indonesia.

  1. It is very frightening that the authorities refuse to protect the public exercising their right to religious freedom. Infact the way I see it by omitting to stop these violent protesters shows that the government is promoting fundamentalism. Muslim fundamentalism is no longer a local problem-its international and now has became terrorism. 99% of terrorist activity is being undertaken by Muslim terrorists. Is the Indonesian government supporting these criminals? I suggest that the Police immediately stop these private enforcers from the mosque and provide security for all people to practice their faith. I am confident that while the world watches, many wonder why it has not been nipped in the bud-we remember Bali!
