Faith and Practice: Islam does not sanction killings

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I feel doubly obligated to speak out. I wish to extend my deep condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their dear ones and to the Christian community at large.

Almost 60 innocent worshipers lost their lives in a bloody massacre in a Baghdad church on Monday ("Iraqis live in fear after church slayings," Page A-5, Nov. 2). In a statement by al-Qaida, Our Lady of Salvation Church was "a filthy den of polytheism" and similar attacks would continue in the future.

I have no words to express my utter disgust at these detestable acts of terror carried out in the name of Islam.

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I feel doubly obligated to speak out. I wish to extend my deep condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their dear ones and to the Christian community at large.


I wish to clarify that these ignominious acts have nothing, by far, to do with the teachings of Islam. The Quran teaches that to kill one human is akin to killing all humanity. It preaches that Muslims must fight to protect the honor of churches.

Prophet Muhammad ordered Muslims to respect churches and to fight for the Christians in times of need. In this difficult time, my heart weeps with my Christian brethren.
