Following the election of noted human rights activist Asma Jahangir to the Supreme Court Bar Association, clerics fear that the law declaring Ahmadi Muslims as non-Muslim in Pakistan may be amended, according to an Urdu-language daily.

At a meeting of the International Khatm-e-Nabuwwat Movement, a religious coalition that works to enforce the view that the Prophet Muhammad was the last prophet of God, the clerics vowed to resist any change in the Pakistani law on Ahmadi Muslims.

Ahmadi Muslims are dismissed as Qadianis, i.e. after the Indian town of Qadian from where the Ahmadiyya movement began. They are accused of not believing that Prophet Muhammad is the last prophet of God.

The religious leaders also vowed to resist any change in Pakistan's blasphemy laws, which affect Ahmadi Muslims, Christians and other religious minorities, according to a report in the Urdu-language daily Roznama Jasarat.

The clerics fear that a movement may emerge to secularize Pakistan and to repeal the law against Ahmadi Muslims following the recent election of Ms. Jahangir as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Ms. Jahangir is known internationally for her bold political assertion against Islamic fundamentalist groups in Pakistan.

According to the report, the religious leaders also pledged that they will fight against any proposal to change Islamic clauses in the Pakistani constitution which give Pakistan an Islamic identity and declare Ahmadi Muslims as infidels.

The clerics also warned Ms. Jahangir to refrain from using her post and her influence to bring any changes to the Islamic character of the Pakistani state, the report added.
