Ahmadiyah is considered heretical by some quarters who proposed to the state to immediately disbanded the organization. However, Akbar Tandjung, a senior politician of Golkar Party, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives has assessed that the state could not dissolve the religious organization by reason of differences in beliefs.

"If Ahmadiyah has its own belief, state can not dissolve it. The State should not be a party in the realm of beliefs," said Akbar Tanjung in the Office of the DPP Golkar Party, Jl Anggrek Nely Murni, Slipi, West Jakarta, on Friday, February 18th, 2011.

Akbar has argued that Indonesia was established on the basis of diversity and does not constitute an Islamic state.  Therefore, the state could not act on the basis of siding with any religion.

"That's because our country is not an Islamic state, in contrast to Malaysia," said Akbar.

According to Akbar, the state cannot take action against any person or organization for what they believes. However, the state can act if a person or an organization is to act against the law.

"If anybody violates the law, either individually or as an organization, state can take action," added the former general chairman of Golkar Party.

To resolve the conflict in recent times, Akbar propose to always build a constructive dialogue.

"It must be continually open dialogue with Ahmadiyah. And all should be open to differences," he concluded.
