Ahmadiyah Indonesia spokesman Zafrullah Ahmad Pontoh said Monday he suspected the deadly attack against dozens of the sect’s followers in Banten had been well-planned and organized.
“That was a systematic attack. We had received information that people would launch an attack three days earlier, but yet the police still failed to prevent the clash,” Zafrullah told a press conference held at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).
Three were killed and five were injured in an attack against the Ahmadiyah congregation in the village of Umbulan, Pandeglang regency, Banten, on Sunday morning.
Local media reported the deceased suffered multiple injuries during the onslaught, including stab wounds measuring two centimeters deep.
Zafrullah said the group of attackers consisted of about 1,500 people, coming not only from the village, but also from other places surrounding the site. “That was further proof that the attack was well-organized,” he said.
National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo admitted on Sunday of failing to detect the movement of the attackers. “However, we tried to evacuate the Ahmadis but they rejected it,” he said.
