Indonesia: Horrific Video Shows Brutality of Attack on Ahmadiyah

In the 30-minute video —apparently shot in secret by the Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) — only about 30 police officers can be seen guarding the home of Ahmadiyah cleric Ismail Suparman.

Horrifying video footage circulating among news organizations in Jakarta shows that Indonesian police were outnumbered and unable to prevent the brutal attacks on members of the Ahmadiyah sect that left three people dead on Sunday in a Banten village.

In the 30-minute video —apparently shot in secret by the Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) — only about 30 police officers can be seen guarding the home of Ahmadiyah cleric Ismail Suparman.

They offer little resistance to a mob of about 1,500 people carrying bamboo planks and machetes, and are quickly overwhelmed.

Edited excerpts of the video have begun airing on Indonesian TV stations, but the most graphic violence has been left off the air, perhaps to avoid stirring up further religious hatred.

Twenty-one Ahmadi’s had been guarding Suparman’s house after he was detained by local police on suspicion he had been proselytizing, which is forbidden under a 2008 ministerial decree restricting Ahmadiyah’s actvities.

The video shows police attempting to persuade the Ahmadi to leave the house, with one plain-clothed officer filmed warning the group that a mob was headed for the village.

The mob subsequently stormed the village. There were no police barricades erected to prevent clashes.

“Police get out. Burn these Ahmadiyah people!” one man shouted.

The mob immediately attacked the house with rocks and the people inside were forced to flee.

A JAI official who shot the video said members of the mob wore green ribbons to differentiate friends from foes. “It was clear that they were prepared for an attack,” said the man, who spoke on the condition he not be named amid fears for his safety.

The footage also shows the mob swarming around two lifeless bodies covered in mud. The Ahmadiyah man said the pair were chased to a nearby rice field where they were killed with bamboo and stone strikes to their heads.

The crowd then dragged the bodies along the road. Others were filmed attacking the corpses.

The three people who were killed were identified as Roni, 30, Mulyadi, 30, and Tarno, 25. Five other Ahmadiyah members were severely wounded in the incident, including 45 year-old Deden Sujana, whose right arm was nearly severed by a machete.

  2. Despite our differences in color, race, religion, etc. we all share a few similarities. For instance, we all live on this planet called EARTH and we are all HUMAN. I think many have forgotten this fact which is why people, such as those depicted in this video tend to act like savage beasts in the wild. It's so unfortunate that these people are killed for being, well, PEOPLE. For being individuals and practicing their own faith and their own beliefs. Whatever happened to Islam: The religion of peace? I do not believe that senseless acts of violence or any acts of violence for that matter would be condoned by "Allah". The killings and hatred need to end NOW!

  3. This anonymous commenter above shows the foundation of the wickedness some have in their hearts. I dont agree with your ideology and whatever happens to me is ok. This is your "Islam" that we should turn to?? So this is the warning to those who disagree with you?? Barbaric mobs are your answers to calls for civil debate. My stomach is turned by the violence and evil unleashed here. How does one bring themselves to even look on let alone participate and cheer. This is pure evil. May God respond to those responsible and may He protect the world from such evil hard hearted beasts as these.

  4. Our Australian Ahmadiyya community is horrified to learn the brutal attack on our fellow Indonesian Ahmadis in just 110km from the capital Jakarta. This incident is all over the news highlighting the decadent social fabric of Indonesian society. As an Ahmadi I can understand that it is widely condemned and the above article reflects this mood and is much appreciated. A mob of over a thousand rioters attacked the house of an Ahmadi apparently demanding him to stop worshipping in his own house. The rioters incited hateful slogans and assaulted the Ahmadis present in the house, overwhelming them by large numbers. The Police acted as a silent spectator refusing to intervene or protect the Ahmadis in their own property. During this assault the extremists brutally killed three Ahmadis, which was recorded in a video, showing a vicious and savage attack in the name of religion only reminiscent of European medieval inquisitions or Nazi brutalities. All this happened in the name of Islam. A true blasphemy on Prophet MuhammadSAW and Islam. This is not the first time that the minority Ahmadiyya Muslim community is targeted in Indonesia, there had been several attacks on their mosques and houses in the past few years. Many Indonesian Ahmadis are living as refugees within their own country. Indonesian nation has to delve deep & reflect on this sorry state of affairs. The Europeans had learnt lessons from their dark ages and separated the church from the state which triggered a renaissance and re-emergence of their civilisation. The more time Indonesia and Pakistan are going to take to realise this the more they will postpone their progress and development, in fact, they will recede into chaos and fragmentation.

  5. Astagfarullah, may Allah be merficul and forgive those who are lost. To "anonymous" above...Allah is ever merciful and loving, so if He can be as such, then who are WE to judge others let alone, play the role of Allah by taking the lives of others- and in this case, the INNOCENT lives of those martyrs who were killed in Indonesia.

There is no compulsion in religion. The killings in these videos are horrific, barbaric, absolutely disgusting and everything that Islam is NOT...no wonder the rest of the world has a distorted view of what Islam means. May Allah have mercy on these heartless men and may he elevate the status of the martyrs lost here to the highest level of heaven.
