During his speech at the National Press Day ceremony in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said violent, law-breaking groups must be disbanded when necessary based on judicial grounds and democratic principles.
The statements came in the aftermath of several violent and attacks on religious minority groups, including the bashing and stabbing to death of three members of the Ahmadiyah congregation in Cikeusik, Banten, and serious injury of dozens of others, as well as destruction and vandalism of their property.
Yudhoyono further added that government officials should refrain from “making statements that were not in line with inter-religious harmony”.
The President instructed all heads of regional administrations, military personnel and police to take steps to detect, prevent and punish those responsible for acts that cross the boundaries of decency.
“The local administration must perform their duty and responsibility, in accordance with the authorities vested in them,” he said, as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
